THE GOOD: Gold's UMEDA has the best and most comprehensive complement of weights and workout machines in Osaka and it's open 24 hrs a day, 6.5 days per week. It really is among the best workout facilities in Osaka in many ways.
THE LESS THAN GOOD: There is no pool at the Umeda branch.
Also...the facility can be cramped during busy times.
TATTOOS: In Japan tattoos have strong connection with the Japanese underworld, so tattoos are not not just considered body decoration traditionally.
IN FACT not only Gold's Gym, but most PRIVATELY OWNED Japanese bath houses very commonly forbid people who bear tattoos.
Usually if they are easily hide-able, they will let you slide though.
SO ...The tattoo issue is more strongly matter of a strong cultural convention which is very common to privately owned bathhouses, rather than pure discrimination. It's certainly unfair, but its a common tradition in a very conservative society.
PUBLICLY OWNED bathing facilities however MUST ALLOW EVERYONE regardless of skin decoration.
So I assume public gym facilities also follow the same policy.
In summation, I think Gold's Umeda is great!

I went at a non-busy period so it was pretty chilled allowing for good use of majority of the equipment, but I can see how it can cramp up easy. All in all its quiet a nice gym with good range of equipment to keep up your routine! One thing noting though to bring another pair of shoes to train in and no showing of tattoos whatsoever as a cultural norm in the gym.

This golds is central and is open "24/7" so is convenient, also the people who go are very serious about their training so you can get lots of good advice. However the space isn't very large, and it can become cramped very quickly.

Golds gym Umeda, Osaka. Great gym with great equipment. Just remember if your a westerner, Japanese rule you must bring second pair of shoes for inside the gym. Do not walk into the gym with the same shoes you walked off the street in or they will probably shout at you like they did with us.
If you don't have a second pair you can hire shoes from them for around 300y. Single visit is pretty deer, paid 2800y.
