I don't give 5 stars very often but I felt Desiderata deserves a 5. We stumbled across Desiderata after being told by Province that it was fully booked so we wandered around and came upon Desiderata. What we thought was the restaurant was the bar of the hotel and after finding the rather unassuming entrance down a set of stairs to the restaurant (which means it's hard for people to notice that people are dining in the restaurant and see how nice it looks) we were pleasantly surprised by the rather elegant and formal surrounds.

The restaurant has preserved a little bit of history in the 16th Century well at the centre of the room and adds a rather interesting feature. Tables were set with crisp, white tablecloths and serviettes and elegant lighting on one wall highlights a feature wall of white tree branches - tastefully done. Quite a romantic setting.

Three of us dined and we all had a soup and the salmon dish. We were treated to a complimentary amuse bouche - delicious! Best I have had in many years - the taste buds were set for the first course. Tomato soup for me and the chicken consomme for the other two - fresh and lovely tomato flavour and not overdosed with cream. Complimentary breads of at least 3 varieties - delicious - not your ordinary plain boring bread. Then a palette cleansing sorbet readied our palettes for our main course. The salmon came with julienne vegetables, shiitake mushrooms, soya star anise jus. I thoroughly enjoyed the asian fusion flavours and while salty, I did not find it heavy-handed. My last experience at a highly awarded asian fusion restaurant was not good - both courses were very, very salty - so much so that no other flavours shone through and the salt dominated the palette for hours after. So I was very happy with the chef's treatment of soy and star anise and while it was salty it was not so salty that salt became the dominant flavour.

If you want to feel pampered and made to feel special and get treated to complimentary amuse bouches, palette cleansing sorbets and delicious breads and pay just over 60 euro plus a tip for two courses for three persons plus two beers and a glass of wine you can't go wrong here.

The waitress was attentive but not intrusive. We dined early at 6pm and were the only diners, but I think more people should wind their way down to this restaurant. You could order 40 euro lobster or 36 euro sole but if you choose wisely from pastas, salads, soups and mains you can eat quite reasonably compared to the other menus we looked at around old Riga.
