When somebody else is footing the bill, any town seems just that little bit nicer, but I think that Strasbourg is a beautiful city for any visitor. Sitting close to the German border in the Alsace region of France, Strasbourg has both an interesting mix of French and German culture, as well as the importance of being one of the capitals of the European Union. Strasburgo (Strasbourg in francese, Straßburg in tedesco, pronuncia in alsaziano, "Strasburgo" viene dal latino Strate Burgum, letteralmente "la città delle strade") è una città di 272. 123 abitanti della Francia orientale, capoluogo dell'Alsazia e del dipartimento del Basso Reno, al confine con la Germania sulla riva sinistra del Reno. Il suo nome è tedesco perché, in passato, il territorio dell'Alsazia era passato sotto il dominio sia della Francia che della Germania. L'Alsazia fu presa alla Francia dalla Germania (che allora era comandata da Bismarck) durante la battaglia di Sedan del 1870, e da allora fra i francesi nacque il sentimento del revanscismo, ovvero, la volontà di riprendersi un territorio considerato complementare della propria patria.

I suoi abitanti, gli strasburghesi (Straßburger, strasbourgeois), vivono in un'agglomerazione urbana transfrontaliera che comprende anche la città tedesca di Kehl.

Strasburgo, assieme a Bruxelles, svolge il ruolo di capitale politica d'Europa, in quanto sede permanente del Parlamento europeo e del Consiglio d'Europa. La città è inoltre un importante centro universitario ed è sede, fra l'altro, dell'ENA.
